Good evening, Salem.

Dolly Parton’s quest to get kids reading young is spreading across the Salem area.

Every ZIP code in Marion and Polk counties is now enrolled in the singer’s Imagination Library, which mails a free monthly book to children from birth through age 5. Parton’s foundation selects books, while local sponsors cover the costs to print and mail them — about $2.20 per book.

The Marion Polk Early Learning Hub announced the milestone Wednesday. Dallas was the final area to be covered, thanks to donations from Ford Family Foundation, Willamette Health Council, Dallas Community Foundation and an anonymous donor.

The nonprofit launched the program in July 2022, beginning in four ZIP codes in Salem and Keizer. It has gradually expanded since, with about 6,180 kids enrolled.

Families can sign their children up to receive free books here. Those interested in supporting the Imagination Library locally can buy tickets to a Friday, Sept. 27 evening fundraiser at the Gilbert House Children’s Museum here.
