Good morning, Salem.

Once again, Salem police have defeated the city’s fire department – at least in the effort to secure blood donors.

The annual Battle of the Badges blood drive held earlier this month ended with 62 blood donors recruited by local police and firefighters, with many in uniform stepping up to give a pint.

It’s the fourth year police have recruited more donors than fire, police spokeswoman Angela Hedrick said in response to an inquiry from Salem Reporter.

But the real winners are the cancer patients and trauma victims who will receive the 54 units of blood collected for hospitals. The need for blood donors remains critical, the American Red Cross said. You can sign up to donate at the agency’s Salem blood center or a local drive on their website here.
