Your Wednesday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.
The Center 50+ Wellness on Wheels Program, a mobile senior center which takes services into Salem neighborhoods, has received a national award for its work.
The van received the National Innovation Award from the National Institute of Senior Centers for its work to connect older adults with the community. Center 50+ is among the seven senior centers awarded this year, according to a statement from the city of Salem.
The program brings services, fitness classes and company to seniors in Salem through its Wellness on Wheels, or WOW, van. Salem Reporter joined the van for an afternoon of gardening at the Highland Village Garden last summer.
At Elderfest last week, Center 50+ Director Marilyn Daily-Blair said the program was a result of coming together to combat isolation during Covid.
“That program was so important because we discovered a whole group of people who may never come to one of our senior centers. Through the mobile senior center program, we’re able to serve them,” she said. “Getting recognized is pretty exciting, and that’s because of community support.”
