Good evening, Salem.

Starting in late May, students at South Salem High School will be screened for weapons as they enter school.

School district officials chose the high school for a pilot of two weapon detector systems. We have details below on how it will work, how the district made the decision and the mixed public feedback the systems have gotten so far.

In other news, the city’s budget committee voted Wednesday night to restore funding for parks maintenance, including splash pads, and summer concerts and events in Riverfront Park.

The vote was split, with some raising concerns about spending down city reserves further. If Salem doesn’t find a new source of money over the next year to support city operations, those services will be on the chopping block again next year, City Manager Keith Stahley has warned. We have more on that decision below too.
