Good evening, Salem.

The May 21 primary election is approaching, and our team will begin publishing coverage of local races next week.

Before ballots go out, though, we wanted to pass along a reminder from the Marion County Elections Office: April 30 is the last day to update your voter registration, including political party preference.

Oregon has closed primaries, which mean you must be registered to vote with a political party to weigh in on that party’s candidates for office. That means if you want a say in who runs for president, attorney general or other partisan offices, you’ll have to be registered as a Democrat, Libertarian, Republican or with another political party.

If you’re an unaffiliated voter, you’ll still get to vote in many local races. Salem City Council elections are nonpartisan, as are many county offices in both Marion and Polk counties.

Here’s some of today’s news. Find all our coverage on our website here.
