Your Monday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.
Sometimes, local journalism forges unexpected connections.
That was the case last week, when Managing Editor Rachel Alexander got a surprise email from author Zoraida Córdova.
Córdova’s 2021 novel, “The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina,” is this year’s Salem Reads selection, inspiring a month of special activities at the Salem Public Library that touch on the novel’s themes of death, inheritance, Ecuador and flowers.
The author read Salem Reporter’s coverage and asked if we could put her in touch with the librarians organizing the program.
That led to a new event on the Salem Reads calendar – a Zoom appearance from Córdova to discuss her book next week. See a full calendar of Salem Reads events here.
Córdova will appear via Zoom on Tuesday, Feb. 20 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Salemites can join the event via Zoom, or attend the streaming event in-person. Registration is needed to receive the Zoom link for the event.
“Thank you for your role in this unexpected but welcome turn of events,” librarian Sonja Sommerville wrote.
