Good evening, Salem.

After more than six years at the helm of one of Salem’s largest homeless services organizations, Dan Clem is retiring.

Union Gospel Mission publicly announced Monday that Clem, their executive director, would retire when a successor is chosen. The board will begin a search for that successor “in the coming months,” the announcement said.

During Clem’s tenure, the organization led a capital campaign to build a new men’s mission in central Salem on Northeast Commercial Street, moving out of an aging building downtown that has since been demolished.

Clem has led the ministry since 2017 after serving as chief executive officer at the Salem Chamber of Commerce. He also represented west Salem on the city council for a decade.

“It has been a blessing and a profound privilege to lead the Union Gospel Mission and serve the Salem and Keizer communities. I look forward to assisting in the transition and am confident that the Union Gospel Mission will continue its impactful work under new leadership,” he said in a statement.
