Good evening, Salem.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to be aware of fraudulent phone calls from anyone identifying themselves as police and seeking to collect unpaid traffic fines. Such callers may demanded you pay over the phone and threaten that if you don’t, a warrant will be issued.

“We would like to firmly advise all community members that this is a scam – genuine law enforcement and federal agencies do not act in this manner,” the sheriff’s office said Wednesday.

The agency said anyone in doubt should hang up, call its non-emergency number at 503-588-5032 and ask to talk with the “deputy” who claimed to be calling them.

Anyone who believes scammers have targeted them can report the phone number to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
