The annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk will meet at Riverfront Park, 200 Water St. N.E., on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 9 a.m. The walk is a 2-mile loop that starts at 11 a.m. after an opening ceremony.

Those who aren’t able to complete the entire walk are invited to join for the opening ceremony, or make a shorter loop around the park.

The Oregon Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is hosting the event, and funds raised go toward education, research and survivor support programs.

“Suicide touches one in five American families. We hope that by connecting with one another, we will draw attention to this issue and keep other families from experiencing a suicide loss. Our ultimate goal is to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide,” said Erin Weldon, Oregon Area Director at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in a press release.

The Salem event has raised over $28,000 as of Thursday evening. For more information, see the foundation’s website.
