Good morning, Salem.
The city hasn’t seen a major flood a decade.
On Tuesday, Salem leaders invited residents to a free open house dedicated to floodplain management.
“All are welcome to attend to help us identify new flood hazards, mitigation goals, and the best ways to protect people and property,” the city said in a news release. “If you have recently moved to Salem or purchased property along one of the City’s many creeks or low-elevation areas, you are encouraged to attend the open house.”
The event is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 28, 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Salem Public Library Anderson Room A, 585 Liberty St. S.E.
The open house is intended to allow the public to ask questions and provide feedback as the city updates its Floodplain Management Plan, which “identifies flood hazards throughout the community, evaluates the problems caused by those hazards, reviews possible mitigation activities, and creates an action plan to mitigate those flood hazards,” according to the city’s website.
The plan was last updated in April 2018, and a committee revising it will hold its last of three meetings on Oct. 3. The Salem City Council would then receive the new draft plan and it would be open for public comment.
