Your Wednesday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.
Andrea Castañeda, the new superintendent of the Salem-Keizer School District, spoke Monday to dozens of Salem leaders at the Salem Chamber of Commerce’s first forum speaker series event of the school year.
She spoke about the district’s budget outlook for the coming year as district leaders are in negotiations with employee unions for new contracts, including wages. Our story here has more detail on that process, and we’ll keep an eye on it as it unfolds.
Castañeda also addressed school security and safety, speaking about the network of thousands of cameras that monitor local schools and how district security officers coordinate with law enforcement in event of a school threat.
As the school year begins, our team is working on a story explaining how the district responds to security incidents now following the removal of police officers from schools. Let Managing Editor Rachel Alexander know what questions you have at [email protected].
