Good evening, Salem.
Thunderstorms in northwest Oregon Monday night may produce funnel clouds, which rotate and turn to tornados upon touching the ground, according to the National Weather Service in Portland.
The agency said in a statement Monday that showers are expected to continue through the evening with a 15-40% chance of thunderstorms, which may produce funnel clouds, heavy rain, accumulating hail, gusty winds and lightning.
Salem residents should be aware of the risk, but there is a low probability of funnel clouds forming, according to Rebecca Muessle, a meteorologist for the weather service.
The agency’s latest reading at McNary field is forecasting a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8 p.m., then a slight chance of showers. A low around 49 is expected, with west wind around 9 miles per hour becoming south after midnight.
The weather service on Monday morning reported waterspouts – tornadoes over water – over the Pacific Ocean, west of Cape Falcon.
Muessle said anyone who sees a funnel cloud, or hears thunder or lightning, should go inside and stay away from windows.
“It’s not something that necessarily people should be worried about, but definitely something to be aware of,” she said.
