Good evening, Salem.

You’ve probably never been to a land use planning party before, but a Wednesday celebration at the Capitol could change that.

Oregon’s Department of Land Conservation and Development is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the state’s land use planning law, passed in 1973, which requires cities and counties to make development plans. The program was intended, among other things, to preserve agricultural and forest land and prevent urban sprawl.

The party features speakers, a poet, light refreshments, free seedlings for the first 250 attendees and an “Oregon market” showcasing the state’s agricultural and forest products.

The event runs Wednesday, May 24 from 12-2 p.m at the Capitol Mall. More information is available on the department website.
