Your Thursday evening update on Salem news

Good evening….
The League of Women Voters of Marion and Polk Counties on Wednesday evening gathered their members to learn what’s going on with local news and what that means for the community and society.
In the zoom hour, I joined Meghan Jonas, community news director for Capital Community Media, to share thoughts about the state of local news. Meghan and I didn’t coordinate our presentations. We haven’t even met yet, but our outfits collaborate on the radio program “Behind the Story.”
Both of us keyed in on a vital challenge for local media – and local citizens. The issue: Finding local information you can trust. As I tell anyone in our profession who will listen, I consider the No. 1 job for journalists at this hour is regaining the trust of the American people.
Meghan detailed her own passion for building community trust and connectoins. She did an excellent job outlining how Capital Community Media is doing and will do that.
League members were attentive and thoughtful with their questions. I thank them for having me speak. As a reminder, those of us who bring you Salem Reporter are always willing – time permitting – to appear as a guest speaker to discuss our work, journalism, what’s happening in Salem and more. If your group wants to book a speaker, send me an email: [email protected].
