Some Salem drivers may have to take new routes next week when the city’s 3×3 basketball tournament closes off four streets.
Hoopla is slated for July 12-17 on the streets around the Oregon State Capitol, but street closures begin Monday.
City officials said in a news release that from 6 p.m. on Monday, July 11 through 9 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, drivers should avoid three roads scheduled to close:
-Northeast Court Street between Northeast 12th Street and Northeast Cottage Street
-Winter Street between Northeast Chemeketa Street and Northeast Court Street
–Northeast Waverly Street between Northeast Court Street and State Street
From 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 14 to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 17, Northeast Cottage Street will be closed between Northeast Chemeketa Street and Northeast Court Street.
This year’s tournament is a longer one, growing from a previously four-day event to now six days.
Team registration for the event ended June 30. A schedule of events is available online.
Hoopla last year drew a record 1,012 teams after the 2020 event was canceled due to the pandemic.
The 2021 tournament included a new free clinic for high school student athletes with disabilities which will be expanded this year to include middle schoolers.
