Camps, summer school and pre-kindergarten programs run by the Salem-Keizer School District are canceled Wednesday, Aug. 11 through Friday, Aug. 13 due to forecasted triple-digit temperatures.

The cancellation applies to any full-day program and any program scheduled to end after 12:15 p.m., the district said Tuesday.

Sports practices and events follow heat guidelines from the Oregon School Activities Association, which call for practices to be modified or canceled if the heat index is above 95 degrees. The heat index is a calculation of how hot outside conditions feel based on actual temperature and relative humidity.

At heat indexes above 105 degrees, all outside practices and activities should stop, OSAA says.

As of Wednesday morning, Salem’s forecasted high is 102 degrees, and the forecasted heat index high is 121 degrees, according to the OSAA website. Coaches will update students and families if practice schedules change, the district said.
