Salem city races are expensive. Here’s who’s writing the checks.

Significant campaign contributions from real estate firms and political action committees have helped boost Mayor Julie Hoy’s six-figure bid for reelection.

That’s according to campaign finance data from the Oregon Secretary of State’s website analyzed by Salem Reporter.

The numbers show her opponent, Councilor Vanessa Nordyke, has raised substantially less money, with individual and small donors making up a larger share.

Hoy’s campaign had taken in about $191,000 to Nordyke’s nearly $77,000 in total contributions…

  1. Julie is either buying a lot of lawn signs or upgrading the restaurant kitchen….Interesting haul considering she avoids media questions 😕

  2. Julie Hoy voted to give her donor Larry Tokarski an expensive exception to a requirement to put in a sidewalk in one of his developments. In a debate with Nordyke Hoy said she saw no problem with that and would do it again

  3. Avoiding questions from citizens and media is on brand for Hoy, saw her once out of West Salem Clinic she didn’t power walk, she walked briskly with her shoulders around her ears and her head down. Why did she run for mayor if she doesn’t want to interact with anyone besides middle school bully the old City Manager out of his job?

  4. Great article, guys! But you committed an unforced error with the donut charts: the colors are not consistent between the two charts. e.g. “individual donors” is light blue on Hoy’s chart, and purple on Nordyke’s. If you’re going to be using charts side-by-side to be compared, then they should use the same colors for the same categories as much as possible.

  5. As a resident, I have not seen that Julie Hoy cares about her constituents, as she states. She has ignored all requests to answer questions, debate in front of them, or even just get to know her constituents–unless it was a paid event by her donors. It’s insulting our intelligence and gaslighting to suggest otherwise. I voted early for Vanessa Nordyke.

  6. Vanessa said all you need to know. She’s not for sale. Julie was bought a long time ago. So obvious. Why don’t people care?

  7. Homelessness is the main issue for me in this race. I believe Julie Hoy is stronger on homeless issues than Vanessa.

  8. The city has steadily improved since Julie Hoy has become mayor. She’s got my vote!
