The Latest Stories For You From Salem Reporter

Good morning, Salem.
The event, put on by the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, comes months before the May election for mayor, where Julie Hoy is seeking a second term against challenger Councilor Vanessa Nordyke.
The chamber’s leadership uses the event to decide on their endorsement in the race, which is one reason it’s held so early.
Speaking of – if you’re new to city politics, you may have noticed the timeline for the city’s mayoral elections is a little odd.
Mayors serve two year terms, and those seeking re-election spend their second year in office campaigning. That’s because the election that typically decides who serves as mayor takes place months before a new mayor is actually sworn in.
Voters will choose between Hoy and Nordyke on May 19. Other candidates could still decide to file up until a March 10 deadline, though their odds of success against two established Salem politicians are long.
Because it’s a nonpartisan race, the winner in May still goes on the November ballot. (If there are more than two candidates and neither wins a majority, two candidates could appear on the November ballot.)
Thus, Salem voters typically see a round of uncontested city races in November, often provoking confusion. The winning slate of candidates – council and mayor – then take office in January, eight months after voters select them.
