Your Tuesday evening update on Salem news
Good evening, Salem.
After an emotional and lengthy city council meeting Monday night, city councilors took a step toward declaring a state of emergency over immigration arrests in Salem. They did so in a 6-3 vote.
Speakers for nearly three hours urged councilors to take various actions to support immigrant families in Salem, with some describing the impact of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests on family and friends.
A few attendees expressed support for ICE actions. Our recap below includes why councilors voted the way they did and a summary of the testimony.
The emergency declaration is largely symbolic, and won’t be in effect until council votes on another resolution, which is likely to happen next week. If Salem takes that step, it would join Hillsboro and Woodburn, which both declared states of emergency last week.
“In recognizing the impact of ICE’s violent, secret-police tactics, we thank our Salem City Council for recognizing the urgency that this moment demands of all of us. We look forward to working with the city on strengthening protections for our immigrant and farmworker neighbors,” said Reyna Lopez, executive director of Oregon’s farmworker union PCUN, in a statement Tuesday.
