Good morning, Salem.

Over two hundred people filled the Salem Public Library’s auditorium last night as community members shared testimony about recent immigration enforcement and called for the city council to protect immigrants in Salem.

During its meeting Monday night, the Salem City Council listened to dozens of people criticize the impacts of recent activity and arrests by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents around Salem.

Some people called for the city council to promise that the Salem Police Department will never sign agreements to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. Oregon’s sanctuary law bars such agreements, and Salem police don’t share data from video cameras with ICE.

Others called for the council to criticize Marion County’s lawsuit requesting a judge to decide if it can respond to ICE subpoenas. Last week, the county provided information responsive to those subpoenas after a federal judge ordered the county to do so.

One sign in the audience read “Too much silence from Salem City Council.”

Mayor Julie Hoy and Councilor Vanessa Nordyke started the meeting with statements of support for Salem’s immigrant communities. Nordyke named resources such as the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition and the Oregon Department of Justice, which both track reports of ICE activity and arrests.

Salem Reporter will have a complete story about the meeting later today.
