Your Wednesday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.

Two Democrats who sit on Salem’s transit board announced Wednesday they’ll challenge Marion County Commissioners Kevin Cameron and Colm Willis for their seats next year.

Sara Duncan is seeking Position 1 against Cameron, who has filed to run for a fourth term leading the county. Maria Hinojos Pressey, a former Salem-Keizer School Board member and the Cherriots board chair, is seeking Position 2, the seat held by Willis. Both challengers have supported a business payroll tax to expand bus service, though recently opted to hold off on the proposal to negotiate with businesses who objected to a tax increase.

The commission seats are partisan, so a primary election held in May will determine the nominee for each party. The Democrats nominated for each seat would face the current commissioners in the November 2026 election.
