Your Monday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.

Trump administration officials told a federal judge Monday they’ll pay out partial food benefits this month amid the government shutdown.

But when Oregonians will see that money on their Oregon Trail cards remains unclear. The Oregon Department of Human Services said Monday it’s still awaiting information from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which funds the program.

Meanwhile, more businesses are stepping up offering meals and donations are pouring into the Marion Polk Food Share. Marion County sent $100,000 to the food share, and Oregon BottleDrop announced a $30,000 donation to 12 food banks across the state, including the food share.

We’ve updated our guide below on how to donate to support people in need of food or find food.

One of the businesses offering food is Don Froylan Creamery, which has pledged lunches and dinners to anyone receiving SNAP until benefits are restored. We visited this weekend for their Dia de Muertos celebration and caught some piñata fun – check out the video here if you need a bit of joy in your day.
