Your Friday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.

Tomorrow afternoon starting at noon, thousands are expected to gather near the Oregon State Capitol for Salem’s No Kings Day protest against the Trump administration.

The protest includes speakers and a short march along Northeast Center Street and parts of downtown.

Also on Saturday, a caravan of vehicles from across the state will reach the Capitol to protest Gov. Tina Kotek, and the bill awaiting her signature to raise taxes to fund the Oregon Department of Transportation, according to posts online.

The caravan’s organizers told Salem Reporter the event will be peaceful and is not meant as opposition to the No Kings protest.

Salem police officers will be on scene Saturday to monitor the protests, Salem Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Jon Hardy said.

The protests are not expected to close any local roads as of Friday, but traffic and safety updates will be provided by Salem police on social media platforms X and Nextdoor, according to Hardy.

Officers have made plans to prepare for potential clashes between protesters and will act as a “buffer” between the two groups. Hardy said the department wants all protesters to have “uninterrupted free speech” Saturday.
