Your Monday evening update on Salem news
Good evening, Salem.
Two Salem schools went into lockdowns today – in both cases because of people carrying weapons outside the building. Students and school employees remained safe, district officials said, and police said there was no threat to either school.
At Richmond Elementary School in southeast Salem, students spent about an hour and 15 minutes locked inside classrooms after school employees saw a person with what appeared to be a long gun at a nearby house.
The school was locked down as a precaution, Salem police spokesman Sgt. Jon Hardy said, and there was no threat to the school. He said police arrested several people at the house with outstanding warrants.
“We initiated a lockdown around 9:15 a.m. and immediately engaged our district’s safety and security team, as well as law enforcement. There was a significant law enforcement response as they investigated the report,” Principal Samantha Miley wrote in a message to families.
Counselors are available to students at the school, the message said.
The school district’s behavior intervention center at Fruitland was also locked down for about 20 minutes Monday afternoon after an employee reported seeing someone with a gun near campus. Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded and arrested a woman with a handgun, the agency said in a news release. Three students were at the school at the time.
