Your Wednesday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.

About a month ago, Marion County officials filed a high profile lawsuit they said was intended to clarify Oregon’s sanctuary law.

The county had multiple requests from federal immigration authorities for personal information about people on county parole. Oregon’s sanctuary law generally prohibits providing that information for immigration enforcement.

Among the county’s arguments: anyone could get the same information ICE was seeking by filing a public records request under Oregon’s open records law.

Salem Reporter decided to check.

Today, our newsroom got back documents that the county assembled for, but hasn’t provided to, ICE.

We aren’t publishing individual contact information, employers, or other identifying information not freely available in court records. But the documents give a clearer look at how the county got here – and some of the legal questions at play.

Reporter Madeleine Moore explains more below in her detailed look at the case.
