Middle schoolers in local schools will soon be walking through weapons detectors when they head into school.
School district officials announced the plan today, saying security screenings would roll out starting in late October at the first schools.
Why is this happening? Chris Baldridge, the district’s security director, pointed to a growing share of young people facing weapons charges. We asked Marion County’s juvenile department for their data. Below is what they sent us, showing far more middle school-aged students have been referred on weapons-related charges in the past three years.
