Your Friday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.

The high school sophomore who killed a classmate last spring in Bush’s Pasture Park settled the criminal case against him on Friday afternoon.

Nathaniel McCrae, now 17, admitted to a juvenile second-degree murder charge and an adult weapons charge. The agreement will allow him to serve his sentence at a youth correctional facility.

The settlement brings to a close the criminal case in one of Salem’s most high profile acts of public violence in recent memory. But the lingering issues the shooting raised about gang violence, a lack of resources for struggling teens and school security loom large in Salem. Our story below has more on the agreement and what it means.
