Salem’s park bathrooms have been vandalized frequently in recent years, sometimes to the point of being inoperable.
But contrary to what Mayor Julie Hoy said during a Monday city council meeting, Salem police could find no record of a bathroom being “firebombed” at Marion Square Park.
Homeless advocates say the mayor’s statement, which came during a discussion of downtown public safety, is symptomatic of more inflammatory rhetoric surrounding people without shelter.
