Your Monday evening update on Salem news

Good evening, Salem.

Tonight, city councilors will hear the Salem Police Department’s plans for reducing deadly violence in the city.

It will be the latest update on the Community Violence Reduction Initiative, a collective effort by law enforcement, community organizations and service providers in response to a rise in shootings.

They are focusing on people and areas of Salem at the highest risk of violence, building trust between the community and the police and “creating a greater sense of community, connectedness and security,” according to a city council report.

The initiative has two components: criminal justice and community-based work.

Salem Police Chief Trevor Womack recently told Salem Reporter that his agency will lead the criminal justice side, but outside organizations will have to coordinate the rest. He said so after the city tried but failed to hire a coordinator in the city manager’s office to lead the work. You can find our latest story on that effort HERE.
