What to do in Salem from May 22-28: Memorial Day services, comedy shows, scenic garden

Here’s a roundup for the week from Thursday, May 22, to Wednesday, May 28, which includes Memorial Day weekend.

Memorial Day events
*Monday, May 26: The Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs is hosting the state’s annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. The ceremony will be held at the Oregon World War II Memorial, located on the Oregon State Capitol grounds at the intersection of Northeast Cottage and Court streets. Those who attend will hear remarks from the state agency’s director, Dr. Nakeia Council Daniels, as well as other veteran leaders, state officials and honored guests. The program will include the national anthem, a presentation of colors and a moment of silence.
This year’s ceremony will be held on the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. The memorial honors the more than 3,700 Oregonians who died during the war. Seating will be limited. People can bring their own chairs or blankets. Those who can’t attend in person can livestream the event on Facebook and YouTube.
*Monday, May 26: City View Funeral Home and Cemetery, located at 390 Hoyt St. S.E., will host its annual Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. The service includes a jet flyover, a wreath presentation, bagpipes and the 21-gun salute. It will be held in the American Legion Circle for veterans of World War I and II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
Scenery
Thursday, May 22: Sip a glass of wine, listen to live music and walk through the display garden at Schreiner’s Iris Gardens during “Golden Hour.” Organizers described the event as a rare opportunity to photograph the iris fields and garden after hours. Musician Don Mitchell will perform. The event lasts from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $15. Children 12 and under get in free without a ticket.
Comedy
Thursday, May 22: Steve Hofstetter, billed as one of the most popular standup comedians on YouTube, is bringing his act Salem’s Historic Grand Theatre. Hofstetter has sold out shows in hundreds of cities and dozens of countries. He previously hosted the TV movie Finding Babe Ruth on FS1, the series Laughs on FOX and has appeared on shows including The Late Late Show, E! True Hollywood Story, Comics Unleashed. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $30 to $150, with VIP meet-and-greet packages available. Ages 14+. The Grand is located at 187 High St. N.E.
Thursday, May 22: Standup comedian Chad Opitz, a frequent performer in the Bay Area, is coming to Salem’s Infinity Room. “Veering between one-liners, short story jokes, and sometimes even song, Opitz’ writing is as well-regarded as his character and performance work,” an event listing said. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 online and $20 at the door. All ages are allowed but material will not be clean. Infinity Room is located at 210 Liberty St. S.E.
Friday, May 23: Subhah Agarwal, a Los Angeles-based standup comedian, writer and actor, is also performing at Infinity Room. Agarwal has written for shows including Netflix’s Arsenio! Live, The Jim Jefferies Show on Comedy Central and Comedy Knockout on TruTv. She released her debut comedy special Airport Pigeon on Amazon Prime, as well as her comedy album Dog. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 online and $18 at the door. All ages are allowed but material will not be clean.
Hikers’ hangout
*Friday, May 23: Spend the evening with Franziska Weinheimer, a local hiking guidebook author and creator of the website Hike Oregon, for a book signing and meet-and-greet at Gilgamesh Brewing: The Campus, 2065 Madrona Ave. S.E. Her books include “52 Hikes for 52 Weeks: In the Willamette Valley, Central Oregon Cascades & Coast,” “Lakes of the Cascades: 50 Enchanting Oregon Lake Hikes,” and “Oregon’s Best Views: 50 Breathtaking Viewpoint Hikes.”
Books will be sold at the event. Weinheimer invited those who attend to bring gear they have questions about, maps with trails they want her to look at and discuss routes, trip plans and itineraries. The event starts at 5:30 p.m.
Live music
Saturday, May 24: Three Salem-based bands are bringing a blend of genres to Infinity Room for a single show. They are Wild Ire (prog, pop and rock), The Ferenjis (jam funk rock) and Sadgasm (emo and alternative). Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 online and $15 at the door. All ages.
Painting
*Saturday, May 24: The Salem Public Library is hosting two adult art classes at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Participants will paint on an 11×14 canvas with acrylic paint. All materials will be provided. Participants can only register for one class. Registration must be done online for both the morning and afternoon classes. They will be held in the Anderson Room at the library, located at 585 Liberty St. S.E.
Bubble show
Saturday, May 24: “The Amazing Bubble Man,” Louis Pearl, has been thrilling audiences around the world for over 30 years with the art, magic, science and fun of bubbles. He performs at 2 p.m. at the Chemeketa Community College Auditorium, 4000 Lancaster Dr. N.E., Building 6. Tickets are $14.22 for children 12 and under, $18.46 for people 65 and older, and $20.58 for teens and adults. For families of four, there are also tickets for $15.28 per person.
Cinema
Sunday, May 25: Silent Film Sunday at the Elsinore Theatre features “Wings,” starring Clara Bow. “Two young men, one rich, one middle class, who are in love with the same woman, become fighter pilots in World War I,” an event listing said. There will be live organ accompaniment by Rick Parks on the Mighty Wurlitzer. The film, released in 1927, runs two hours and 24 minutes. Doors open at 1 p.m. and showtime is at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5.
