GO NUTS. In an effort to lure shoppers back downtown, the Salem Main Street Association has turned the city center into a game of bingo.

The association is hosting Go Nuts Downtown, a game where participants visit downtown shops to earn stickers for bingo cards. Those that visit all 36 participating retailers and receive stickers for their cards by Dec. 5 can enter for cash prizes ranging from $100 to $250. To participate, visit the contest’s website to register and download a bingo card. Three winners will be selected.

Tiffany Bulgin, manager of the IKE Box and board member of the association, said that the game is intended to encourage shoppers to visit downtown retailers when large gatherings have been banned because of the pandemic.

“For retail shops, the holiday season is such a big part of their year and Covid has affected it in so many ways,” she said.

FOOD TRAIL. It may be harder to travel because of the pandemic but local farms and other food-related businesses in Polk County are inviting locals and visitors to hit the Great Oaks Food Trail. Developed by Travel Oregon, Travel Salem and the Polk County Tourism Alliance, the trail is a self-guided tour with 40 stops that include farms, orchards, produce stands, wineries, breweries, eateries and more throughout Polk County.

For more information, visit the website for the Great Oaks Food Trail.

DISASTER DEADLINE EXTENDED. Residents of Marion County and others who’ve lost their jobs or saw their hours reduced because of last month’s historic wildfires have a little more time to apply for special unemployment relief. The Oregon Employment Department announced on Wednesday that it is extending the filing deadline for Disaster Unemployment Assistance to Friday, Nov. 27. The benefits are available to people, including those self-employed, who’ve had their employment adversely affected by the fires and are ineligible for normal unemployment benefits.
