NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS: What’s happening across Salem in June

Neighborhood News is a monthly Salem Reporter feature to highlight news or issues of concern to each Salem neighborhood association. Read previous editions here.

Salem is divided into 17 neighborhood associations that meet monthly. They serve as a conduit to city officials for things like park improvements, road projects and planning and building. Learn more and find your association here.

Leaders of each association are invited to submit a brief news item or report highlighting the association’s work, neighborhood concerns, upcoming activities or anything else of interest. Submissions are lightly edited for style and clarity.

Grant Neighborhood Association

Grant took a turn hosting the Neighborhood Association Saturday Market booth on May 23. Grant Vice Chair Kat Keys (seated) and CANDO board member CJ encouraged visitors to find their Neighborhood Association on the giant map. It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood!

Grant Neighborhood Association JUNE News

Grant was back at Saturday Market this season on May 23, this time as a participant in the City-Wide Neighborhood Association booth. Watch for rotating NAs twice a month. Stop by and say Hi to Salem’s enthusiastic community leaders. If you don’t know your NA, they will help you find it. If you want more information about all things Salem, just ask – someone is bound to know. Grant’s turns roll around again July 25 and September 12.

Our next Grant meeting will be on August 6 (we take a breather in July) at Broadway Commons at 6:15 with an informal Meet & Greet beginning at 5:45. Thanks to our hosts, we are set up for Zoom and in-person participation. The Zoom link can be found at grantneighborhood.org  All welcome!

Detailed minutes of our meetings are available on the City site. They are also included in the monthly GNA newsletter. The GNA website has the Zoom link for remote meeting attendance, information about the board, Grant neighborhood history, community information and more. Follow us on Instagram and  Facebook. Northgate Neighborhood Association

As June is a transitional time between Spring and early Summer, we’ve had almost hot weather one day and cool the next. Lots of fluffy clouds keep us cool yet when the sun emits its rays, it’s almost unbearably hot. When that happens, the flowers wither easily but if you have a veggie garden, the effect the sun has on them is just amazing.

We can compare June to the teenage time of a person. A teenager’s raging hormones can easily be compared to June weather. A bit undecided.

Anyway, please look at the May photo of Chief Womack who kindly came to Northgate Park to pick up a picture of his beautiful and brindle dog “Bronson”, a farewell present from our association for all the wonderful work he has done for us.

We have a diverse range of cultures and people, here in Northgate, which may make things a bit challenging for the police. Yet he persisted. We shall miss this special chief very much.

Last month, the Northgate Neighborhood Association presented retired Salem Police Chief Trevor Womack with a picture of his dog Bronson as a farewell gift. (Northgate Neighborhood Association photo)

By the way, our association will be holding an emergency group training led by Joe Hutchinson, Emergency Manager, Salem City Fire Department at 6 p.m. on June 18th, 2026, at 360 Degrees, 2405 Carleton Way NE next to Northgate Wesleyan Church. Please let us know in advance if you wish to attend so that we can make extra room for you.

South Central Association of Neighbors

SCAN’s June meeting is on Wednesday, June 10, from 6:20-8:30 p.m. at Pringle Community Hall, 606 Church Street S.E.

If you’ve been wanting to attend a SCAN meeting, June is the perfect opportunity to do so! This month’s meeting will be starting a few minutes earlier than usual so neighbors can mingle ahead of the meeting. Then we’ll hear from Nenette Sequiera, a Water Educator with the City of Salem. We will also be electing board members for the upcoming year.

Give us a follow on Instagram @scansalemofficial and on Facebook at Facebook.com/salemscan to stay updated on events happening in South Central Salem.
