COLUMN: Meet Salem’s heron family

The Interstate 5 herons are back at their nests. 

The great blue herons have a nest colony just southeast of Exit 263.  It’s visible best from northbound lanes.  The nests are in mature cottonwoods east of I-5, and will be easily viewed until the trees leaf out.  If you spend any time near our streams or lakes or marshes, you’ve seen the great blue heron.  Hunting often at the water’s edge. Tall and silent, unless perturbed. Let’s…
