Salem-Keizer offers school registration help at July 15 event

Families who need to register their children in the Salem-Keizer School District can get help at an event next week.
School district employees and workers from social service agencies will be available Tuesday, July 15, from 3-7 p.m. at Houck Middle School, 1155 Connecticut St. S.E.
It’s the first time school district officials have organized a registration event during the summer. Though registration can be done online, families often have questions or need help.
The timing is also intended to take pressure off of school staff, who often receive a flood of inquiries when school offices reopen in August.
“We have hoped to do something like this for several years to help support families during the month of July when schools are closed, but the first year we have been able to make this hope come to fruition,” district spokeswoman Emily Reverman said in an email.
The timing will also allow families new to the district to sign up for summer programs. Reverman said district officials particularly hope to get more participants for Jump Start Kindergarten, a free August program where incoming kindergarten students meet their teachers and get used to a school schedule before the first day of class.
The Tuesday event will also have fun summer activities families can bring kids to.
