Shooting at West Salem apartment leaves 1 injured, suspect arrested

Salem police are investigating a shooting at a West Salem apartment complex Wednesday evening that left a 21-year-old man hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds.

Witnesses described a disturbance among a group of teenagers before gunfire erupted, according to Salem Police Department spokeswoman Angela Hedrick.

Officers responded to a report of a person with a gunshot wound in the 1200 block of Northwest Orchard Heights Road, Salem police said in a post on X shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday. The victim was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

Witnesses described seeing a male suspect flee the area.

Police searched for the suspect with a canine team and drone and arrested a 16-year-old boy in the 1000 block of Northwest Cascade Drive.

The suspect was transported to Yamhill County Juvenile Detention and faces charges in Polk County, police said.

Police shut down the road between the Orchard Heights Park entrance and Northwest Chapman Hill Drive. They asked the public to avoid the area.

Hedrick said she could not identify the apartment where the shooting occurred.
