What to do in Salem from May 8-14: Mother’s Day, walk in the park

Here’s a roundup for the week from Thursday, May 8, to Wednesday, May 14.

Take A Walk in the Park Day

*Saturday, May 10: The Salem Parks Foundation is celebrating Salem’s parks with a two-mile walk between Riverfront Park and Minto-Brown Island Park. The walk, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., will have four stations to get stamps. People with all four stamps can enter into a drawing for prizes.

Participants can start walking at the Riverfront Park Pavilion, 200 Water St. N.E., or at Wallace Marine Park on the west side of the Union Street Railroad Bridge. It’s a free event, but donations will go to restore the Eco-Earth sculpture at Riverfront park. For more information, see the foundation’s Facebook post.

Kids clothing swap

*Saturday, May 10: A free kids’ clothing swap aims to reduce waste and build connections between neighbors. Anyone is welcome to take what they need, even if they don’t have clothes to contribute. Those able can bring clean, gently used kids clothing, sizes 0-12.

The event is a collaboration between the Highland Neighbors and the South Central Association of Neighbors. It will be at Center 50+, 2615 Portland Rd. N.E., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Clothes can be dropped off at Center 50+ in advance. For more information, see the Facebook event.

Local basketball

Saturday, May 10: The Salem Capitals basketball team will play the Vancouver Volcanoes this weekend at the Salem Armory, 2310 17th St. N.E. The game starts at 6:30 p.m., and tickets are $12. Buy tickets and get more information about their schedule on the capitals’ website.

Mother’s Day events

Sunday, May 11: Several Salem restaurants and wineries are hosting special Mother’s Day deals and brunches. They include Chemeketa Cellars, The Easy Otter and Stangeland Vineyards & Winery

Infinity Room will be hosting a comedy show featuring a lineup of all moms, including Hannah SK, Eleanore Ryan, Havana, Angie Bloomfield and Lacie Wood. Doors open at 6 for a 7 p.m. show. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. It’s all ages, but the material won’t be clean.

México en el Corazón

*Wednesday, May 14: A free evening event will celebrate Mexican heritage with food and live music. The event will be at the Gerry Frank Amphitheater at Riverfront Park, 200 Water St. N.E. from 5-9 p.m.

Art history lecture

*Wednesday, May 14: Philip Nickel, a longtime art history teacher at Sprague High School, will give a free lecture on the subject of creativity under revolutionary times. The lecture focuses on rebellion against power through art, including Basquiat, Guerrilla Girls, at Abu Ghraib and more. Register for the free session online. It starts at 6 p.m. at the Salem Art Association, 600 Mission St. S.E.
