2 girls charged in Englewood break-in, vandalism

Two girls, ages 12 and 13, are facing burglary and criminal mischief charges in Marion County Juvenile Court in connection with a weekend break-in that caused thousands of dollars in damage at Englewood Elementary School.

Police arrested the girls Tuesday evening and transported them to the juvenile department, Salem police spokeswoman Angela Hedrick said. They appeared in court Wednesday morning.

Troy Gregg, the Marion County Juvenile Department director, confirmed the charges.

Juvenile court records are generally confidential under state law, and Salem Reporter does not typically identify minors charged with crimes in juvenile court.

A school employee discovered on Sunday that the north Salem elementary school had been broken into and vandalized, with graffiti on the walls, classroom posters torn down and some items stolen.

School started two and a half hours late for Englewood on Monday to give teachers time to put their classrooms back in order and catalog missing items.

Salem-Keizer School District officials on Monday estimated the damage to the school at over $10,000. District spokeswoman Emily Reverman said Thursday she did not have an updated estimate and did not know which school the girls attended.
