Fire on central Salem railroad tracks contained

A two-alarm fire early Wednesday on railroad tracks near North Salem High School sent up smoke visible across central Salem, but was put out before spreading to any structures.

Firefighters responded to the blaze around Northeast Union and 12th streets, which broke out 6:57 a.m., said Brian Carrara, deputy chief of administrative services for the Salem Fire Department.

The fire did not spread beyond the tracks and surrounding brush.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze by about 7:50 a.m. Carrara said no injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation.
