Pedestrian walking along Turner Road struck, killed by freight truck, police report

An 81-year-old Salem man walking alone Saturday, Aug. 12, was struck and killed by a freight truck leaving a Walmart store on Southeast Turner Road, according to the Salem Police Department.

The agency identified the victim as John A. Schwiewek.

Angela Hedrick, agency public information officer, said that according to a preliminary report, Schweiwek was in a marked crosswalk, crossing the driveway of the store at 1940 Turner Rd. S.E. at about 11 a.m. Saturday.

“He was struck by a tractor trailer pulling a refrigerated trailer. The driver of the semi was exiting the Walmart parking lot and turned for northbound travel,” the police statement said.

The agency identified the driver as John L. Griffin, 62, who it said was cooperating with police. He was not cited or arrested as the investigation continues.

Hedrick said Schwiewek lived in one of the mobile home parks on Turner Road, about a mile south of the Walmart store.

Schwiewek is the 10th person to die in Salem this year in collisions, police said.
