Driver strikes, kills pedestrian east of Salem

A driver struck and killed a Salem area resident early Tuesday morning, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

At 12:48 a.m. on Tuesday, a 911 caller reported a car had struck a pedestrian on Northeast Cordon Road near Northeast Auburn Road, just east of Salem, the sheriff’s office wrote in a statement Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency responders arrived within minutes of the call, and the pedestrian, 44-year-old Kelly Joseph Fields, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, a 22-year-old woman driving a 2011 Toyota Camry, remained at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.

Investigators with Marion County’s multi-agency CRASH team determined the driver had been traveling northbound on Northeast Cordon Road when she struck the pedestrian in her lane.

There is no indication that speed or impairment by the driver contributed to the crash, according to the sheriff’s office. The agency said the investigation into the crash is pending and it would release no additional information.

Marion County Fire District #1, the Marion County District Attorney’s Office and Marion County Public Works helped the sheriff’s office respond to the crash.
