Downed power line causes major outage in South Salem Thursday

About 5,000 people in Salem were without power Thursday morning, according to the city.

At about 11:30 a.m. the city announced the outages in a post on Facebook, noting that power and phone lines were out at Civic Center in downtown Salem.

“According to PGE, approximately 5000 customers in Marion County are affected by the outage,” the post read. “Some traffic signals are affected at this time. When a signal is not working, treat it like a four-way stop. We will update you when power is restored and our phones and internet connections are restored.”

The Portland General Electric outage website at 12:10 p.m. showed 2,524 still affected, with the cause of the outage determined to be a tree down on a power line.

Power was restored later in the afternoon, around 12:30 p.m. according to the city’s Facebook post.
