Deputies on Thursday arrested a Salem man charged with shooting and killing a man in east Salem on Feb. 25.

Ivan Herrera-Ortiz, 20, was charged Friday with second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon in Marion County Circuit Court.

Hererra-Ortiz is accused of killing 37-year-old Roberto Gorie of Salem.

Around 7:22 p.m. on Feb. 25, a 911 caller reported a crash in a residential area of unincorporated east Salem.

Deputies and emergency services personnel responded and found a black Honda Civic “on its top” on Northeast Vernon Street near Herrin Road, according to a news release issued the day of the shooting.

The only person in the car had “suspicious injuries” and was pronounced dead at the scene, the news release said.

On Feb. 28, Sgt. Jeremy Landers said an autopsy the morning after the shooting ruled the manner of death a homicide.

The sheriff’s office the next day announced that the victim died of gunshot wounds and identified him as Gorie.

Herrera-Ortiz was identified as a suspect in the shooting and arrested without incident at his place of work in Woodburn, according to a Friday news release. He was lodged at the Marion County Jail.
