Police: Salem driver hits, seriously injures pedestrian

An 84-year-old Salem driver hit and seriously injured a pedestrian Friday afternoon, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies determined the driver, David Smith, was going west on Northeast Silverton Road in a 2010 Dodge Ram when a 33-year-old woman stepped into the road a few hundred feet west of Northeast Lancaster Drive. The crash happened around 1:45 p.m.

Smith remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

The woman was taken to the hospital and was in critical condition as of Saturday, July 31, the sheriff’s office said in the release. Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Jeremy Landers said he didn’t have an update on the pedestrian’s condition as of Monday morning.

Police didn’t release the name of the pedestrian.
