Signs and solidarity to mark Martin Luther King Jr. event

A group of Salem residents is planning a public vigil in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., conducting a roadside celebration at 12:30 p.m. Monday.

The event is planned at the south entrance to Riverfront Park, at the intersection of Front and State streets to show “solidarity with the values and beliefs that Martin Luther King, Jr. stood for during his life. Those values include justice, equality and peaceful resistance against racist policies,” according to a statement from organizers Tim Buckley and Janvier Slick.

“This is not a march or a protest,” the statement said in inviting others to join in. “We do not plan to engage in any discussion or argument with others. We will of course be masked and social distancing.”

CLOSURES: All government offices are closed on Monday, including the city of Salem, Marion County, and state agencies. Banks are closed but in-store branches may be open. There will be no mail delivery. Cherriots will run on a normal weekday schedule.
