It’s the first full week of the new school year, and Salem-Keizer’s school board will meet virtually Tuesday night to hear updates and consider several resolutions.
Board members will vote on a resolution re-affirming the district’s Safe and Welcoming Schools policy, which, among other things, says the district will not collect or maintain information about students’ immigration status or allow federal immigration officials access to students in school without a warrant.
The board will also consider a proclamation for Hispanic Heritage Month and a Health and Safe Schools plan, which details a testing schedule for lead in school water and other steps to test for environmental hazards.
Board members will vote on recommending Director Jesse Lippold to serve on the Oregon School Boards Association Board of Directors.
District administrators will update the board on the Student Investment Account, a new source of state funding for local schools which was expected to add about $35 million this year to Salem-Keizer’s budget before the economic impacts of the coronavirus pandemic slashed state revenue.
Administrators will also give a back-to-school update.
The board will listen to public comment for up to one hour on agenda items, and up to a half-hour on non-agenda items. Comments must be submitted using this district form by 2 p.m. Tuesday for videos and 4:15 p.m. for written or call-in comments.
Board members: Satya Chandragiri, Danielle Bethell, Marty Heyen, Jesse Lippold, Sheronne Blasi, Kathy Goss, Paul Kyllo
Meeting details: The meeting will steam live on YouTube at 6 p.m. Sept. 22 in English and Spanish. It will also be broadcast on CC:Media, channel 21.
