The Oregon Scenic Bikeways Program will hold a free event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 24 in the Galleria in the Oregon State Capitol for those wanting to learn more about the state’s cycling routes.

Since starting in 2009, the program has designated 17 Scenic Bikeways throughout Oregon, covering 1,253 miles, according a press release announcing the event. The bikeways, which vary in difficulty and pass through a distinct landscape, are nominated by local communities for their scenic quality, road conditions and riding enjoyment.

For instance, visitors wanting to explore the Willamette Valley’s verdant agricultural areas can take the long way, cycling through the mostly flat Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway that stretches from Salem to Brownsville passing by hops, grapes and marionberries.

The event will include videos, speakers and information on the scenic bikeways — as well as cookies.

“We’re proud of the work we’ve done and look forward to collaborating with our partners to promote more routes that inspire people to experience Oregon’s natural and cultural beauty by bicycle,” said MG Devereux, deputy director for Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, in a press release.

According to the press release, the event’s speakers include Devereux, Stephen Hatfield, outdoor recreation manager for Travel Oregon, and a member of the Scenic Bikeways Committee.

The Scenic Bikeways Program is a partnership between the Parks and Recreation Department, Oregon Department of Transportation, Travel Oregon and Cycle Oregon.

According to a study by Travel Oregon, the state’s tourism promotion agency, Scenic Bikeways cyclists spent $6.9 million on accommodations and food services, and $5.3 million on retail in local communities in 2014.
