AGENDA: Salem-Keizer board will vote on West Salem land purchase, discuss policies

Members of the Salem-Keizer School Board will meet Tuesday to vote on a West Salem land purchase before discussing the policies outlining how they supervise Superintendent Christy Perry and how they work as a board.
The board will vote on buying a 1.3 acre property at 1755 Doaks Ferry Road for about $500,000. The property is a single home east of the West Salem campus which district staff want to acquire because of planned school construction.
After that vote, the board will discuss their governing policies, which spell out the role they play in overseeing Oregon’s second-largest school district.

The Salem-Keizer board takes a relatively hands-off approach to governing the district: they don’t vote to approve district policies or specific curriculum as many Oregon school boards do. Instead, they set broad policies about the superintendent’s role and the results they expect to see, while leaving most day-to-day decisions up to district staff.
