The Salem police officer shot during a Tuesday night traffic stop has been released from the hospital and the suspect was arrested before 9 a.m. Wednesday morning after a short negotiation, police officials said.
Salem police spokesman Lt. Treven Upkes said police worked all night to trace the suspect to an apartment complex on Broadway Street, just north of Locust Street northeast.
Officers negotiated with the suspect for “about half an hour,” Wednesday morning, Upkes said, and the suspect surrendered without conflict.
No information about the suspect has been released. The suspect reportedly shot an officer from a van in the 500 block of Highland Avenue Northeast at around 8:30 p.m. during a traffic stop.
“At this point I don’t have a lot of information about that and we’re going to need a little bit of time for detectives to do a complete, thorough work-up,” Upkes told reporters outside the scene Wednesday morning.
SWAT vehicles and several Salem Police Department cruisers had cordoned off blocks of Broadway Street Northeast for hours Wednesday morning.
Neighbors noted a similar scene to the one described by Upkes. Lisa Smith, who lives in the complex, said police started searching the area by 9 p.m. Tuesday. She said by 7 a.m. she heard police communicating over loudspeaker to a suspect.
“They were over the loudspeaker advising him to call 9-1-1, and then it was silent for a while and then he came down peacefully,” Smith said.
Salem police posted on social media around 8:50 a.m. that the suspect had been taken into custody.
It’s unknown if the suspect was a resident of the apartment. Crime scene investigators remained at the apartment Wednesday morning after most police presence left.
Upkes said the police officer has been released the from the hospital. He said the officer suffered “some wounds from the gunfire” Tuesday night. Upkes has not said how many times the officer was shot.
Information about the officer could be released later, Upkes said, but he said she was a veteran officer. He said it’s unclear if the officer’s name will be released Wednesday.
“That may or may not happen today. We kind of go based on how they’re feeling and how they’re handling the stress of the situation, because that could exacerbate that,” he said.
