Police seek “vehicle of interest” seen near fatal hit-and-run in West Salem

The Salem Police Department is seeking the public’s help to find what it described as a “vehicle of interest” captured on video shortly before officers responded to a fatal hit-and-run on Dec. 23 in West Salem.

Surveillance video that evening near where the victim was found shows the driver of a white SUV heading east on Northwest Edgewater Street, approaching Northwest Murlark Avenue, police said in a news release Monday morning.

Minutes later around 8:30 p.m., Salem police responded to a report of a man injured at the intersection.

Responding paramedics pronounced Steven C. Bishop, 63, of Salem, dead at the scene.

The Salem Police Department asked anyone with information to call traffic team investigators at 503-588-8477.

Salme police said Monday that the collision occurred on Murlark Avenue, just North of Edgewater Street. The agency’s traffic team’s preliminary investigation determined that a driver struck Bishop then left the scene, according to the statement.

Police said the vehicle appears to be a white Jeep Grand Cherokee, possibly a 2015 or 2016 model.

They asked the driver, anyone who knows the driver or has information about the case to call traffic team investigators at 503-588-8477.
