WEATHER: Salem schools close again, state offices open late Thursday

Salem school kids will be off one more day off on Thursday as the city continues to thaw out.

The Salem-Keizer School District early Thursday, Jan. 18, announced schools would be closed again.

“This closure includes all indoor and outdoor school or district events, travel and the use of district or school facilities by community groups,” the district said.

Aaron Harada, the district’s communications director, said conditions of roads, parking lots and sidewalks triggered the decision. Two schools have been damaged as well, he said.

“We have two elementary schools that have water damage: Harritt Elementary School and Schirle Elementary School. We also have a program, the Behavior Intervention Center with the same. Our maintenance teams are working on repairs,” he said in an email early Thursday.

Chemeketa Community College was delaying its opening on Thursday until 10:30 a.m. and Salem Academy said it was starting two hours late.

CLOSED THURSDAY:

• Salem Child Development Center.

• Community Action Head Start’s Salem-area preschool and Early Head Start.

• Willamette Education Service District’s Salem sites.

The temperature hovered around 45 in Salem much of the night and rain is in the forecast – up to three quarters of an inch. The National Weather Service said the temperature will drop to 39 by the time of the evening commute.

Meantime, Cherriots said it was resuming full service on Thursday.
